Confirmation that specialist teachers make a real difference: PTP outcomes analysed

Submitted by jtrisnan on
Many of you took part in the PTP tutoring programme during COVID and made a real difference to children during that time by assisting with this project.

We are now very pleased to share with you the paper that describes the outcomes of this major undertaking.  The chief aim at the time was to upskill struggling pupils with metacognitive techniques that they could learn to use independently, creating meaningful changes in their approach to learning.

At the time, we measured changes in children's learning engagement and learning behaviour and gathered qualitative observations.  We were able to demonstrate that there was a significant enhancement of school engagement and learning behaviour in response to specialist tutor provision.

The full paper can be read here: tutorpartnership.com/

We are excited to announce our Dyslexia Guild Annual Online Conference for 2024
This conference will be held online on Wednesday 3 July 2024, with the opportunity to hear expert views and examine current topical issues relating to literacy, numeracy and dyslexia/SpLD.

You will have the chance to listen to our four key-note speakers, who will inform you about issues relating to your practice, including why we struggle with maths, the links between dyslexia and anxiety, dyslexia with English as a second language, and a project exploring how neurodivergent young people are at risk of depression. You will also have the opportunity to attend some add-on sessions, including an exploration into the free Guild members toolkit and the latest updates from the Dyslexia Action Shop.

You will also gain a 5-hour CPD attendance certificate (2 of which is SASC accredited) when attending this event.

Our online conference is open to everyone, however, you can attend at a discounted rate if you are a Dyslexia Guild member. Our membership body is open to all those with a professional or general interest in dyslexia and specific learning difficulties (SpLD).

Call for Research Participants: Are you a study skills tutor who supports students with ADHD?

Submitted by jbeechey on

Dear Fellow study skills tutors.

I am conducting research as part of my PhD in Education at The University of Exeter.

This research looks at the experience of university students with ADHD (either diagnosed or who experience symptoms associated with ADHD) who access DSA study skills support. It also wants to capture the experience of study skills tutors who support this group of students. In addition, this project aims to compile an evidence based toolkit of strategies and approaches for study skills tutors and other education professionals to use to enhance support for these students. Therefore, your opinion is very important to this research.

Would you consider completing the questionnaire (approx. 20 mins) to add your voice to this research? The link to the study skills tutor version of the questionnaire is below if you are happy to do this.

To get the best possible results on this important issue, it would be great if you would consider sharing the links below as widely as possible with your colleagues and communities. I have also included the link to the student version of the questionnaire and would be very grateful if you would consider sharing this with your students if possible.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me on this email or on ag973@exeter.ac.uk

Thank you for your help with this.

Best wishes

Andrea

New course for Access Arrangements Coordinators

Submitted by jbeechey on

Real Training have just launched a new Access Arrangements Coordination (AACord) course, which may be of interest if you are an Access Arrangements Assessor, and would like support from a colleague, with some of the administrative tasks surrounding access arrangements.

With a growing number of students requiring support, there are more demands on Access Arrangements Assessors in schools and settings. Having a colleague trained to conduct the administrative tasks will enable you to focus on assessing students, and ensure that everyone gets the support they need.

The course is taught online, so your colleague can study at their own time and pace, with no commitment to spend time away from the classroom. There are no assessed tasks, but instead your colleague will be engaging in discussions, note taking, as well as interacting with a SENCO, teacher, and student who receives access arrangements in your centre.

The course will launch on 20 September, but is open for booking now.

New - Watch our short video ‘How to Become a Dyslexia Assessor: A simple guide’.

Please fee free to share our new video ‘How to Become a Dyslexia Assessor: A simple guide’.

We know many professionals in the dyslexia/literacy environment have aspirations of becoming an assessor (if they are not already) and how to get there is one of the questions we are asked frequently.

Training routes can be complex, as what’s right for individuals will depend upon the qualifications and experience they already have and how much time they have available for studying.

But it’s a great question to start thinking about early on in your career - because it could impact what you choose to study - even if right now you are only thinking of becoming a specialist teacher or practitioner.

Take a look at our short video for all you need to know.
