Call for participants in a research project

Submitted by jbeechey on
I am studying for a postgraduate degree in education at London Metropolitan University.
  • I am currently conducting a research project and would like to invite you to volunteer. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of dyslexic adults in Black and Brown communities (B&BC). The research intention is to address the existing academic gap in knowledge. I intend to reflect on strategies and experiences of the workplace,  increasing my understanding of living with multiple identities: dyslexia and being from a B&BC.
  • Research question:
How do adults with dyslexia from Black and Brown Communities navigate the workplace to achieve success?

  • Aim:
Explore the perceptions and lived experiences of adults with dyslexia from Black and Brown Communities (B&BC) in the workplace, focusing on strategies utilised for their success.

The study has two phases.
  • Participants will be able to contribute to both phases, but for phase 2 of the study, you will be invited to opt into the visual journaling.

Phase 1: Face-to-face interviews
  1. Individuals will take part in a 45-minute semi-structured interview. A 5- 10-minute comfort and movement break will be suggested during the interviews.
  2. The interviews will be conducted at a convenient time and location or can be remote.
  3. Participants will be either diagnosed, un-diagnosed or self-diagnosed with dyslexia.

Phase 2: Visual journaling
A workshop will be accompanied by guidance if required.
  1. Participants will be invited to create a visual journal following a discussion.
  2. Visual journaling will be completed over two weeks, including thoughts, feelings, reflections, and experiences of your dyslexia, work experiences, participating in this research and how you have succeeded.
  3. Visual journals – collage or storyboard.

  1.  It is hoped that you will discuss your employment experiences as someone from a Black and Brown background.

All participants will be informed of their right to withdraw from the research during the data collection phase without giving a reason.
However, once the data has been analysed, it cannot be removed from the analysis but will be removed from the database and will not be used for further analysis.
Pseudonyms will be used for each volunteer to protect your identity.

Test of Retrieval Efficiency (TORE) Assessment is now available to pre-order from the Dyslexia Action Shop!

Submitted by jtrisnan on

The TORE: Now available on pre-order!
We are pleased to let you know that the Test of Retrieval Efficiency (TORE) is now available to pre-order exclusively from the Dyslexia Action Shop.

Written and developed by Anna Smith, Louise van der Valk and Sophia Butler, this all-new assessment test allows you to assess a group of learners at the same time in their ability to to retrieve simple data at speed. It is suitable for ages 13-18, making it ideal for a secondary classroom setting. The test can be completed very quickly, each part only takes 45 seconds and the whole test can be completed in 15 minutes. It is also suitable for learners with English as an Additional Language (EAL), as it does not require them to verbalise the answer.

There's lots of reasons to pre-order; you'll beat the expected rush when the main orders open, and be among the very first to begin assessing your students in a quicker, more efficient manner! You'll also receive your test in a timely manner - as soon as they arrive at the shop, they'll be straight out and on their way to you.

We expect pre-orders to remain open until late April, when the new assessment will arrive at the shop and dispatch will commence.

Want to beat the rush and ensure you can add this new test to your toolkit? Then you can pre-order right here!
Don't forget to use your up to 10% Guild member discount in the Shop.

Call for participants with ADHD for research project

Submitted by jbeechey on

Dr Steve Lukito, Postdoctoral Research Associate presented findings from the Kings College  RE-STAR Research Programme at The Dyslexia Guild Conference 2024, last year.

He says “I am running a survey, open to young people with ADHD aged 18-25 year old, about the positive attitude that young people with ADHD have about their condition. We are interested in investigating how this relates to mental health and personal characteristics such as self-esteem and other traits.

I wonder whether you might be able to help distribute this to the members of dyslexia action (some may have ADHD diagnosis too)?”

Survey - How parks and greenspaces can be more accessible and inclusive for neurodivergent adults

Submitted by jtrisnan on

Laura Phasey, MSc student at UCL has created an anonymous survey (15-20 minutes) aimed at adults aged 18+ who identify as neurodivergent (including, but not limited to autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, OCD, Tourette’s, etc.), and who live in the UK. The aim is to better understand neurodivergent adults experience of outdoor public green spaces, including any sensory and social barriers.

If you could share the survey with your network via mailing lists, social media, or relevant groups,  or if you identify as neurodivergent, you are warmly invited to take part - a formal diagnosis is not required.

There is little research into how neurodivergent adults experience parks and greenspaces, especially compared to children. By sharing your experiences, you’ll be helping to inform more inclusive and supportive design and management of public outdoor spaces - ensuring they work better for everyone.

I have also attached a participant information sheet for the survey, to provide more information on what to expect and providing consent.  Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.

The deadline for responses is Sunday, 6th of July 2025, thank you!
