Who is this course for?

The Dyslexia Action online courses have been developed specifically for Classroom Teachers and Teaching Assistants working in the primary, secondary or high school education fields. Those who are currently employed in specialist support for the under 18s may also apply including tutors currently working in Further Education.  They are NOT suitable for those working in Higher Education.

The Level 4 CPD Certificate in Dyslexia and Literacy Support course is only available to applicants who have successfully completed the CPD Certificate in Dyslexia in the Classroom course.  

What is the Level 4 CPD Certificate in Dyslexia and Literacy Support course?

 This is the second of three courses which can lead to the Level 4 CPD Diploma in Dyslexia and Literacy qualification. This Level 4 CPD Certificate in Dyslexia and Literacy Support course consists of 3 mandatory units and 2 optional units.  Candidates should choose one of the pathways, either for primary specialists or for secondary specialists:

This Level 4 CPD Certificate in Dyslexia and Literacy Support consists of 5 units:

1. Developing Reading Skills in Learners with Dyslexia in the Primary/Secondary school
2. Developing Writing Skills in Learners with Dyslexia in the Primary/Secondary school
3. Developing Spelling Skills in Learners with Dyslexia

Plus, choose 2 of the following 3:

1. Developing Mathematical Skills in Learners with Dyslexia
2. Specific Learning Difficulties: Understanding Co-occurrence
3. Dyslexia: An International Perspective

What will I gain from doing the Level 4 Courses?

The Level 4 courses are designed to strengthen the expertise and confidence of teachers and teaching assistants in primary and secondary school education in order to ensure the progress and achievement of children with special educational needs, specifically literacy. The courses aim to raise awareness of specific learning difficulties, improve the school and classroom environment and change teaching approaches. This will help teachers and teaching assistants to develop inclusive practice and develop more strategic approaches to meet the needs of individual learners.

How will I be taught?

You will study online via our Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle. Each participant has a personal tutor who supports them through the course.  Participants also work together with their colleagues on the course via contributions to discussions on the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) forums.

How much time will I need to commit?

Approximately 7-8 hours per week over 4-5 months.  This includes time spent with learners

What will I get at the end of the course?

  • Dyslexia Action Certificate
  • During 2011/2012, these qualifications will move on to the UK Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and this will allow participants on these units to use them as exemptions to QCF and other qualifications.
  • will be 13/14 credits at Level 4 depending on optional units chosen
