Help Available
The first step is to learn as much about dyslexia as you can. Parents who are concerned that dyslexia may be the problem should talk to their child’s class teacher or tutor. The teacher may seek advice from the school Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo).
The school should decide which school-based phase of the Code of Practice is appropriate and begin an Individual Education Plan. A good assessment of need is vital and should be carried out by a specialist assessor.
Students in FE/HE establishments should contact their Student Support Services, who will arrange for the necessary action to be taken. This may involve an assessment, and the provision of practical support and/or equipment.
Employed adults who are concerned about their performance in the workplace, may wish to approach their employer or personnel department. Many adults feel apprehensive about discussing their difficulties, but they will usually find that others are sympathetic and helpful. Where relevant, employers may pay for an assessment to be carried out in order to establish the kinds of support and/or workplace adjustments that may be necessary.
Employers concerned about the workplace performance of an employee, should discuss their concerns with the employee and may, subsequently, wish to seek professional advice as to the nature of the difficulties, and how these can be supported, where appropriate.
Unemployed adults with concerns about their literacy skills should contact their local Job Centre who will endeavour to help them find suitable employment, and may refer them for an assessment and/or training.
In all cases, if you are seriously concerned, or are worried about a possible delay and want to take immediate action then approach Dyslexia Action directly for advice or to arrange an independent assessment. Contact our Centres to find the address of a Dyslexia Action Centre near your home.
