Postgraduate Diploma in Dyslexia and Literacy

Illustration picture for [title-raw]

This course builds on and develops the skills and knowledge covered in the Certificate course and therefore only students who have successfully completed the Postgraduate Certificate may progress to the Postgraduate Diploma.
Like the Certificate, the Diploma integrates theory with practical teaching. The teaching diary continues, together with a journal of independent research and practice. There is a module that involves working with an adult learner of 16+ years, carrying out an assessment and writing a report. The course is assessed through practical teaching and two summative pieces of work- a case study and an essay.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Dyslexia and Literacy is a comprehensive course comprised of 6 modules, each of which requires about 100 hours of study and carries 10 credits. The Postgraduate Diploma has a total credit value of 60 CAT (Credit Accumulation and Transfer) points at Master's (M) level, validated by the University of York.

The e-learning part of the course is delivered through Moodle and students are assigned a tutor who supports with both academic guidance and practical advice throughout the course. The education tutors are experienced, practising specialist dyslexia teachers.

What students say

Having graduated from the PG Diploma, I am now the SpLD teacher in a large Comprehensive School. I not only support pupils with speciailst literacy teaching but am also able to assess and identify specific needs.
I have received excellent feedback from parents, who feel more confident that their children are receiving the support that they need without the necessity of statementing.
A very rewarding job and I only wish that I had completed the course years earlier. My kids are great - dyslexia rules!

I have thoroughly enjoyed the course and have learnt a tremendous amount and use this knowledge every day in my teaching. The SENCo in our school is finishing at the end of term and the headmaster has asked if would apply for the post. I would have baulked at such responsibility two years ago but I am now full of enthusiasm and eagerness. Many, many thanks.

Course content and structure

The duration of the PG Diploma is one academic year.  There is an intake once a year in October.

Study time is estimated to be equivalent to 15 hours per week during each academic term (600 hours in total)
There are six modules for the Postgraduate Diploma which build on and develop those already studied for the Certificate. These modules cover such aspects as the principles and practice of advanced assessment, professional issues, practical teaching using a multi media structured programme and a module involving a choice of options.
Pupil assessment is studied in more detail than for the Certificate, with a wider range of tests being used and evaluated. This will make students eligible to meet the requirements of the Practising Certificate for DSAs. Practical teaching for the Diploma involves working with an older learner of 16+.

There is a one day Induction School at the beginning of the course, which includes an introduction to additional assessment tests, building on those studied for the Certificate. Successful completion of the course is assessed through formative and summative written assignments, tutor monitoring and observation (by submitted DVD recording) of practical teaching and assessment and contributions to the discussions and topic forums on Moodle. Summative assessment is through a case study and professional experience and impact report. Some assessment is also carried out by peer review. There is no written examination.
