Certificate of Competence in Educational Testing (Level A)

This course is offered in two modes - online and by intensive contact, on a 3-day residential course in a comfortable hotel in Sheffield.

A British Psychological Society qualification for teachers and members of other relevant professions who work with children and adults and who want to use tests well. The course is a high quality benchmark standard for the use of psychometric standards in education. It promotes a wider conceptual model of assessment than 'diagnosis' and therefore enhances your understanding of assessment in general. It will teach you how to use and understand psychometric tests, to use tests appropriately and not to use them when it is inappropriate to do so, and to work more effectively with educational psychologists.

Developed by Real Training and delivered under licence by Dyslexia Action Training. Verified by the British Psychological Society.

  • Use educational tests with great confidence and competence

Course content and structure

This course can be completed by attendance or distance learning. The on-line course is highly accessible and flexible and makes full use of the Real Training Campus Online™ learning platform. This means that you can learn and progress at a pace and time to suit you.

This is a sophisticated internet based facility that supports learning, provides a mechanism for responsive tutoring, encourages communication with peers and enables you to monitor your own progress.

You will also receive a high quality training manual.

You will require approximately 100 hours to complete the course. This includes the completion of a number of assessments and professional reports in your workplace.

If you choose the part-time distance learning option, it normally takes one year to complete, working for one or two evenings a week, increasing slightly in the latter part of the course.

There are seven units, covering theoretical and practical aspects of psychometric testing:

  • Defining the assessment needs
  • The basic principles of scaling and standardisation
  • Reliability and validity
  • Deciding whether a particular test should or should not be used as a part of an assessment process
  • Administering tests and dealing with scoring procedures
  • Making appropriate use of test results and providing accurate written and oral feedback to clients and candidates
  • Maintaining security and confidentiality.

Course materials are in hard copy, plus on-line tutorial support and an interactive website. Learners are required to carry out assessments on individuals and submit the reports as coursework assignments. The subjects of these reports will be anonymous. Other compulsory coursework assignments are set, and may be submitted electronically.

Assessment is by coursework assignment including attendance at a competence day in Sheffield or by web cam towards the end of the online course.

The course materials and the website are developed and owned by Real Training ©. Those registering via Dyslexia Action will be tutored by Dyslexia Action Trainers, (mainly educational psychologists).
