This is a 22 week blended learning course (mostly e-learning, 5 days attendance in separate weeks) for tutors and teachers working in FE /HE settings or as Skills for Life Tutors. This very practical course will equip teachers and tutors working in Adult Basic Education, Further Education or Higher Education, ACL, WBL, Prisons and Probation with the skills needed to identify individual learning profiles and support learners with literacy difficulties.
The course is delivered by specialist tutors. It is credit-rated at Level 4 (Undergraduate Level 1) by the Open University, with 20 points permitted to count towards the Open University BA/BSc degree.
The course now includes training and use of the Hidden Disabilities Questionnaire (HDQ). The HDQ is a newly developed adult screening tool (15+ years). It was developed by Dr. John Rack, a consulting psychologist with Dyslexia Action, and funded by the Learning and Skills Council. The questionnaire is designed to act as an initial screening for dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD, autism and co-morbidity.
Upon successful completion of all units, teachers may apply to the BDA for Approved Teacher Status for FE/HE, provided that they meet the other BDA criterion of having two years' experience of teaching or supporting adult learners.

What students say
I have learnt that through the course I now have a lot of information/skills to hand which I can use for the benefit of students. I never imagined that, having taken early retirement, within two years I would be so eager to learn and so motivated – this is thanks to the job at my college, the students that I meet on a daily basis and the course I have taken with Dyslexia Action. This course has been so beneficial in that it has enabled me to see exactly what I can provide for each individual. I will be starting a new year in September with all of these skills at my fingertips
Christine Jaggs: Birmingham 2009
I have benefited from the extensive and comprehensive range of course handouts that I can utilise now as well as in the future.
The course has made me more aware of the pervasive influence dyslexia can have on all aspects of an individual’s life not just from an educational, training and employment perspective.
The positive feedback that I received from both my learners during, as well as on completion of the programme, was extremely rewarding.
